I am interested in three particular areas: studies of surveillance technologies in urban space;
the interface between military technologies and civil society; and, pervasive, or ubiquitous, computing - the embedding of computer systems in almost all objects and increasingly, people.
I have several synergistic current research strands which flow from these interests:
1. Resilience of UK cities to contemporary threats, including terrorism;
2. Comparative studies of surveillance, particularly in in Japanese cities;
3. Pervasive surveillance technologies and the reconfiguration of urban space;
4. Actor-networks, categorization, permeable boundaries and bureaucracy;
5. Orbital space, and vertical territoriality;
6. Science fiction literature and the city.
